Hello Dolly Has Cast Members From Lovilia

Filed under: Uncategorized — Susan Beary @ 7:47 pm

Albia high school drama dept. presented performances of “Hello, Dolly” Nov. 9, 10, and 11th at the King Opera House in Albia.  Attending the matinee on Sunday, I was pleased with the quality of the singing, dancing and acting for these still young performers.

Some of the actors are Lovilia young men and women or have roots here.  I will try to name them all. Forgive me if I miss someone, or email and tell me and I will then add them.

Mrs. Dolly Levi, the leading singer/actress role, was played by Savannah Stalzer. Her parents are Brad and Mindy Stalzer. Her local grandparents are Joe and Kathy Welsh. Savannah looked smashing in all the elaborate costumes and sang and performed so well.

Allison Hugen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brent Hugen, played Minnie Fay.  Brent grew up in Lovilia.

Nika Spaur, played Irene Malloy, a large supporting role. Her performance was smooth and she sang so well. Tiffany Spaur of Lovilia is her mother. Barb Spaur her grandmother.

CalebToopes was cast as 1st chef. Caleb is the son of Jim Toopes of Lovilia.

Valerie Beary, portraying court clerk, Mrs. Rose, is the daughter of Pat and AJ Beary. Lovilia grandparents are Jim and Shirley Beary.

Makenna Ross was in the townspeople. She is daughter of Kenny and Anna Ross formerly of Lovilia.

Alyssa Burk, daughter of Lovilian, Bill Burk, was cast as a townsperson too.

The lighting tech on spotlight two was Stephanie Beary. She is the daughter of Pat and AJ Beary and granddaughter of Jim and Shirley Beary.

Members of the cast who are in the senior class are Allison Hugen, Nika Spaur, and Valerie Beary. They were honored by the drama coaches.

They young people put in many days of practices and it showed.  It is a joy to see their talents beyond academic or the sports field.  They showed that drama, music, and dance is alive and well!

August 16 String Concert

Filed under: Uncategorized — Susan Beary @ 4:35 pm

Twenty seven guests enjoyed the string concert while nibbling on cookies and drinking tea or fruit punch.  The four musicians were Dan Walker on cello, Linda Hoskins-violin, Joan Peterson-violin, and Joe Starcevic- violin.

They played classical as well as a song from “The Sound of Music” and a Disney hit “When You Wish Upon a Star”.  All mellow and special. We appreciate the musicians taking their time to practice, rewrite some music , and perform for us.  One guest asked me how soon we could do it again.  Another said, not my kind of music but it was interesting.

The good things was we stretched our musical envelope. Thanks to all who came.

Lovilia Book Lovers Come to Lovilia Sept. 13

On Sept. 13 Susan Beary will hand out the book ” Joan of Arc” authored by Mark Twain.  Have you ever heard of it? No, of course not.  It is unique and when he first published he used another pen name because he thought the readers expected a comedy and would not like it.

The book is free by the arts grant that also paid for the painting classes. But we have only seven, yes ,seven books left. So call Susan at 641-946-7952 to reserve one.

You must attend Sept. 13 at the Lovilia Community Building at 6 p.m. to be introduced to the book and to take it home to read and then come back on Oct. 11th at 6 .m. to discuss it with other book lovers.

If you love to read, and you like Mark Twain, you will not be disappointed. He got my attention when I learned he spent 12 years in France and England researching and then spent 2 years writing this book. I have not spent that much time on one project, have you?  So that lured me in to read it.  You will be intrigued and entertained by it.

It is Raining Cats and Dogs

Well, not really. We are getting a good soaking as I write and I hope other places who need it will get some too. Thank you ,God. We are blessed.

Poem by Ed Martin

Ed, now of Arizona, grew up in Lovilia and wrote this poem to show he has never forgotten his home town.

“I Left My Heart In Old Lovilia”

I left my heart in old Lovilia

Low on the plains it calls to me

To be where dusty rusty cars

Are at the north end bar

A party there

Is something to see

Yes indeed.

The cannon’s there in north Lovilia

The Dairy Queen has shut the door

And the buildings in the town

Are slowly falling down

Soon Lovilia will be no more.

My heart waits there in old Lovilia

Above the swirling cedar creek

When I come home to you old Lovilia

The fireworks there will surely peak.

written by Ed Martin

Thanks for sharing, Ed.

Lovilia Scavenger Hunt

Filed under: Uncategorized — Susan Beary @ 9:38 pm

Want to take a walk or bike ride with a destination?  I biked the town today looking for great yards.  Below is a list you can find and check out for your self.

To be included they had to have the lawn mowed well, weed eated and trimmed, no trash in the ditches, no piles of stuff in the yard, and no junk vehicles in the yard.  Also, they were landscaped with beautiful flowers . These were my criteria and no one elses.  Also, I could not list some houses because they have no house number posted or had one that I could not read (like white numbers on a white board).

Not for me but for yourselves, if you have no house number  you are at risk if you call for 911 in an emergency. They use the house number to locate you. So when minutes count, I urge to post numbers where they can be seen clearly from the street.

These are the numbers that impressed me with beautiful yards.  You could make it a  game to see if you could find them.  Have fun tracking them down!

804 , 704, 303 South E Avenue.  502 South F Avenue.  707 W. 8th st.  603, 601 H Avenue.  202, 401, 403 West 5th.  1104, 1302 E Avenue South.  607 west 16th.  1605 South D Avenue. 2006,2008,2302, 2304 2306 2303,2402,2404 North E Avenue.  712, 2004, 811 West 21st.  302 East 22nd. 305 , 206,205 east 21st. and 2002 North I Avenue.

Netherlands Honors Lovilia WWII Soldiers Buried There

Filed under: Uncategorized — Susan Beary @ 3:15 am

A recent email from Stephen Stewart who works with the Monroe County Iowa Genealogical Group told me about the project of the Dutch non-profit organization whose mission is to give a face to the names of the U.S. WWII soldiers buried in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. They asked him for a picture of the Lovilia young man, Donald W. Brown.  He sent the photo and then forwarded the information so I could share it on this blog.

Two Lovilia men are honored at Margraten Cemetery in the Netherlands. They are Donald W. Brown and George G. Grimes.

Data on Donald W. Brown follows:

Born Aug. 17, 1918 , Lovilia, Iowa, Monroe County. He enlisted Mar.24, 1941 and was overseas from January 1944 until his death.   Age at death, 26.  His father:  William R. Brown, mother:  Viola M. (Robbins) Brown, sister:  Dorothy V. Brown, and brothers:  Wilford D., Alvia L. Gerald, and Larry D. His rank was private first class and function was cook’s assistant.  He was in the 113th Cavalry group in the Headquarters troop. He was killed in action January 4, 1945.  He died in the vicinity of Winden and Untermaubach, Germany.  He was awarded the Purple Heart.  His grave number plot 1, row 1, grave 18 at the American War Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands.  His brother Wilford served as a staff sergeant in Germany ad his brother Alvia was a Seaman fist class stationed in Charlestown, Rhode Island at the time of Donald’s death.

Data on George G. Grimes follows:

Born Dec. 27, 1915, Cedar Township, Monroe Country, Iowa. His father:  Forrest Grimes, mother:  Minnie(Kline) Grimes; sisters:  Velta W. and Allie, brothers:  Peter E., Dale V. and Raymond W.  His rank was first lieutenant and his function was navigator. He was in the 67th bomber squadron in the 44th bomber group, heavy.  His plane was a B-24D nicknamed,Calaban. Their destination was Emden Germany to bomb an industrial area.  He died Dec. 11, 1943 at Wybelsum , four miles west of Emden, Germany. His awards were Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.  He has no grave number as he is listed on the “Wall of the Missing” at the American War Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands. Sgt. Mason from a bomber the day George died reported the following:  ” The B-24D ,piloted by Lt. O’Neill, swung over behind us slightly to the right, and about 5:30 high.  They dropped their bombs on the swing.  This was just over the target at about 1225 hours, altitude 21,000 feet. The A/C appeared to be hit by flak or bombs from the A/C in the formation above.  The right wing came off at #4 engine.  The ship went into a spin, caught on fire, and crashed.  No parachutes were seen.”

In the one cemetery at Margraten are buried 10,000 American WWII soldiers. This is how those who volunteer to honor them describe it:

“Thousands of white marble crosses and Stars of David, row after row-this is what one sees when overlooking Netherlands American Cemetery in the town of Margraten, the Netherlands.  The markers are a testimony to the sacrifices made by many young American men and women for the freedom of Europe during World War II.  Through “The Faces of Margraten” project in May 2018 the Dutch will pay special tribute to these service members by decorating thousands of graves and names on the Walls of the Missing with personal photos of these men and women.  The project has started a quest to locate more soldier’s photos.

More than 20,000 people came out to view the more than 4,000 photos that were on display in May 2016, when the tribute was held for the second time. “The response that we have had to The Faces of Margraten project has been remarkable,” said Keith Stadler, superintendent of Netherlands American Cemetery.  “People feel such a profound connection when they are able to see the faces of these young men and women that it leaves with them an impression that will last a very long time indeed”.  Sebastiaan Vonk said, “Even though the war ended 73 years ago, the people of the Netherlands have not forgotten these men and women and the sacrifices that they made for our freedom.  We hope that, in the end, we can put a face to the name of each and everyone of our liberators.”

Since 1945, Dutch locals have adopted the graves of the soldiers there.  Out of heartfelt respect and gratitude, the grave adopters regularly visit the graves and decorate them with flowers.  Many of the grave adopters also continue to correspond with the families of service members back home in the United States,  The respect and honor show to their loved ones has been a comfort to many of these families, and the foundation of long-lasting friendships between Dutch and American families.

The photos are another way to make sure that these men and women are not forgotten.  But they are also a powerful reminder of the cost of war for younger generations.  One visitor stated,” I thought it was incredible to finally see the faces of all these men, making you aware once again that many of these boys are of my own age and fought for our freedom.” Mr. Vonk, age 25, says that ” this makes their sacrifices only more worthwhile.  Their stories continue to inspire younger people today to do better in life, to strive towards a better world.”

The Netherlands American Cemetery is one of 26 overseas American military cemeteries managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission which is an agency of the U. S. federal government.
