Poem by Ed Martin

Ed, now of Arizona, grew up in Lovilia and wrote this poem to show he has never forgotten his home town.

“I Left My Heart In Old Lovilia”

I left my heart in old Lovilia

Low on the plains it calls to me

To be where dusty rusty cars

Are at the north end bar

A party there

Is something to see

Yes indeed.

The cannon’s there in north Lovilia

The Dairy Queen has shut the door

And the buildings in the town

Are slowly falling down

Soon Lovilia will be no more.

My heart waits there in old Lovilia

Above the swirling cedar creek

When I come home to you old Lovilia

The fireworks there will surely peak.

Puppet class and Professional Marionette Show

Aug. 7th in the afternoon was a class to make puppets and then a show in the evening at 6p.m.  Attending the class was Loita Williams and her grandsons, Carson and Garrett; Goldie Kraber and her granddaughter, Andrea; Sandy Keegal and her niece, Brianna Camden; and Abby Findley and Susan Beary The teacher was Monica of Eulenspiegel’s Puppets of West Liberty, Iowa.  Monica brought all the materials for each person to design their own personal puppet and then she taught the designers  some basic maneuvers with them.

In the evening Monica performed the fable, “The Snow Queen”, for an audience of 15 who enjoyed her marionettes and special effects with them.

To finish the evening the five children came up to the stage curtain and had the puppets they had made act out some skits.  Fun and laughter for all.

The classes were free due to a Monroe County Foundation arts grant to Lovilia Community Betterment.

Child Safety Class Held August 9th

The class included tips on internet use safety, personal safety, secret family code, and avoiding being taken by a stranger.  Susan Beary led the class using information from elementary.com.  Check that site out if you were unable to attend the class.

Fifteen adults and children attended the class and there was good discussion and examples of what to do and not to do for safety.
