Velma Slofkosky to Celebrate 100th Birthday August 23rd

Velma will be 100 years old on August 23, 2020. She was born in Columbus City, Iowa. She and Michael Slofkosky married, and after WWII, raised four children: Carolyn, Larry, Paul, and Ken.

The family owned and operated Slofkosky hardware and Laundry in Lovilia. They were members of St. Peter’s Catholic church there.

Velma would love receiving cards and letters from people during these times when we are restricted socially.

Carlon Ray Slay Obit

Carlon, age 77, died July 21, 2020. He was born July 3, 1943 to Harold and Florence (Miner) Slay in Lovilia, Iowa. He attended Lovilia school and graduated with the class of 1961.

December 2, 1962 he married Mary Darlene Spring in Udell, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters: Shelley Lynn, Cindy Joleen, and Vicki Jo.

He had a varied work experience. First with his father in a bottle gas company and furniture/hardware store. Next he spent 10 years operating the Slay Dairy Creme in Lovilia. Then he worked for Gilbert Funeral Home and Ambulance. During this time he was a volunteer Lovilia firemen for many years. Finally, until retirement he worked for Chicago Rivet in Albia, Iowa.

In 1997 he moved to Centerville, Iowa where he was custodian at his church, First Baptist. He also later became a driver for the Amish and had many friends among them.

When young, Carlon loved fast cars and driving fast. He enjoyed hunting quail and pheasant with his bird dog Pal. He taught his girls gun safety and took them hunting too. Carlon also liked ice fishing, crappies fishing, mushroom hunting, card playing with friends, and cooking up fish fries for family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, daughter Shelly Lynn, and brother, Gary Slay.

Surviving him are: his wife; daughter, Cindy Joleen Farrington (Scott); daughter, Vicki Jo Ballalatak (Dean); granddaughter, Leah Irene Stearns (Mitch); grandson, Joshua David Farrington (Nicki); great grand daughter, Norah Mae Stearns; great grand son, Judson Bryan Stearns; and two step grandchildren, Chad Ballalatak and Lisa Valentine (Jason). Also, one brother and sister-in-law , Doyle and Irene Spring.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020 from 2pm-7pm with the family present from 5pm-7pm. at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia. Proper social distancing and wearing a mask is requested. The funeral services will be at 1pm, Friday, July 24, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Centerville with Pastor Dennis Higgins officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Lovilia.

Memorials may be directed to the family and determined at a later date. May he rest in peace.

Georgia Robinson Obit

Georgia, age 90, died July 22, 2020 at the Monroe Care Center in Albia, Iowa.

On May 5, 1930 she was born to George and Mary (Brace) Harrison in Hamilton, Iowa. Her schooling was in Lovilia where she graduated with the class of 1948. That same year on October 23, 1948 she married Lee Robinson in Nashua, Iowa at the Little Brown Church. They shared 65 years together until he passed in 2014. They were blessed with two children, Terry and Carolyn.

Georgia was a homemaker and helped Lee with the farming. For enjoyment she liked embroidering, crocheting, knitting, and gardening. She will be remembered as a good cook and for her passion for time with family.

She is survived by: son, Terry Robinson (Judy Seddon) of Knoxville, Iowa; and daughter, Carolyn (Kevin) Heisel of Fairfield, Iowa. Five grandchildren: Nic (Amy) Robinson, Tina (Nate) Shippers, Sheila (Chad) Larson, Shawn Heisel and Andrea Nixon, and Aimee Gorsh. She also has six great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are: James Harrison, Emma Severino, Peggy Feagins, David (Barbara) Harrison and Judy (Jim) Bonnett.

Georgia was preceded in death by: her parents, husband, and siblings: Betty Lawson, John Harrison, and Gerry Robuck.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia with Pastor Raymond Doser officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Lovilia. Proper social distancing is advised and masks will be available.

Memorials may be directed to the family and will be determined at a later date. May she rest in peace.

The estate of Karl A. Kloster invites a bid on the property at 604 W. 19th Street in Lovilia.

Bidding will be in the nature of a silent auction by which you may appear at the the law offices of Johnson & Lane at 113 E. Marion in Knoxville, Iowa between 8am and 4:30pm until 4:30pm on July 17, 2020.

Parties may enter their bid by writing it on a list, and may bid multiple times until the deadline. Seller reserves the right to reject highest bid.

To locate it for you it is the house that years ago was between Helen Plum and Norman & Ilene Pottoroff. Now between the Ray Doser and Britt Ogle residences.

New City Clerk Hired

Lisa Gilkerson has been hired as Lovilia City Clerk. Her training will begin Aug. 3rd. Current clerk, Patti DeGross ,will work with Lisa until Patti retires on Nov. 3oth. Dec.1st will be Lisa’s first day. Welcome and best wishes to Lisa in her new job serving Lovilia. Happy Retirement wishes to Patti and thanks for your many years of faithful service.

Help Lovilia and Return your Census Form

The city clerk reminds everyone who has not sent in their census form to please do so soon.

Road use money is based on the number of people living in Lovilia. So to receive money for our street repairs we need to count everyone who lives here.

Starting in August, if you have not returned the census form, a census worker will come to your home to gather the information.

Please help Lovilia get street repair money and send in the form now! If you have already done it, thanks!

College Grads

Taylor Doser graduated with a BA in finance from the University of Northern Iowa this year.

Savannah Stalzer and Stacie Etcher both earned AA degrees from Indian Hills Community College.

Gregory S. Griffith Arrested

Griffith, age 32, was arrested on felony warrants for parole violation and narcotics offenses out of Marion and Mahaska counties. His address was listed as Lovilia.

Iowa New Tobacco Law Requires you be age 21 to possess or buy tobacco: Be Alert to this new Law

This brings Iowa into alignment with the federal Tobacco 21 bill that took effect in Dec. 2019.

Under the new law it is illegal to sell tobacco products or supply them to anyone under 21 years of age. If you are under 21 you can not possess, purchase or attempt to purchase a covered tobacco product. This includes vaping products.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency has returned to disposing of these wastes by appointment only.

These appointments are available only on Wednesdays at the Landfill at Tracy.
